Joey P back on the track

John Petrini’s Joey P., who finished 11th and last as one of the favorites in last week’s John J. Reilly Handicap for New Jersey-breds, is back on the track and training for another assignment, trainer Ben Perkins Jr. said.

“He seems fine, sound as ever,” Perkins said. “I don’t really know what happened. Maybe he needed another work or two to get ready because that was his first start since February.”

Joey P. a 9-year-old now, has won at least one race every season since he came on the track as a 2-year-old in 2004, and has never competed in anything less than stakes and allowance company.

“One thing is certain,” Perkins said, “if he’s not able to compete at a good level, he won’t run any more.”

Joey P. has won 18 of 45 starts and earned $1,064,867 in his career.
