Jockey Skyler Spanabel is recovering from broken collarbone
Tampa Bay Downs-based jockey Skyler Spanabel will likely miss the rest of the Tampa Bay Downs winter meet after suffering a broken left collarbone. She is resting at home after being injured after being thrown from Prince Ghost in Wednesday's third race at the Oldsmar, Fla., track.
Spanabel is scheduled to have surgery in Brandon, Fla. next Wednesday. The 23-year-old rider, is expected to have a plate and screws inserted during the operation. She does not have a timetable for her return to riding, though does not expect to ride again before the Tampa Bay Downs meet winds down on May 6.
Spanabel fell when riding Prince Ghost in Wednesday's third race at Tampa Bay Downs, a $32,000 maiden claiming race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. On the far turn, Prince Ghost stumbled badly and unseated Spanabel. According to the race chart, Prince Ghost walked off the course after the race.
"The clavicle broke off my spine and broke in half, so technically it was two breaks," said Spanabel to the Tampa Bay Downs media department. "I want to thank everyone who has been checking in on me."
