Oliver Castillo gets 1000th career win

Jockey Oliver Castillo guided Linda Payne’s Veer to a half-length victory in the first race on Saturday at Laurel Park to record his 1,000th career victory.

The six-year-old Mecke gelding settled near the back of the pack in the seven-furlong claiming race and, despite being fanned seven-wide turning for home, closed gamely for the victory, completing the distance in 1:26.00 on a track rated as fast. Trained by August Martin, Veer won his eighth from 44 starts.
