Jockey Kristina McManigell Injured

Apprentice jockey Kristina McManigell was taken to the hospital after her mount, High Fly Amore, broke down and fell while leading a field of $7,500 claimers at Parx Racing Jan. 17.

McManigell, 21, a native of West Salem, Ill., and a graduate of Chris McCarron’s North American Riding Academy in Lexington, was transported to Aria Health Hospital in northeast Philadelphia after lying motionless on the track.

High Fly Amore, a 4-year-old High Fly filly owned by Ruben Valdes and trained by Victor Collazo, was euthanized after the fall. The third betting choice in the six-furlong test for fillies and mares, High Fly Amore had taken the lead in upper stretch and began to edge away when she broke down, sending McManigell headfirst to the track.

“When I got to her, she was moaning and didn’t know her name,” said her agent, Joe Pagliei.

Pagliei said McManigell was undergoing an MRI and several tests the evening of Jan. 17, but it appeared she escaped without any broken bones.
