Jockey Geroux hospitalized after Keeneland training incident

Sitting bedside at a nearby hospital, Doug Bredar, agent for jockey Florent Geroux, said Sunday that "we're just waiting to hear some results" of tests after Geroux was thrown from his mount in a morning training incident at Keeneland.

Bredar said Geroux was working Air Strike just after 9 a.m. when the Phil D'Amato trainee stumbled past the wire.

"Both horse and rider went down hard," Bredar said. "They hit the rail a little bit.”

Air Strike, a 4-year-old son of Street Sense who won Santa Anita Park's Triple Bend (G2) earlier this season, survived the ordeal.

“The horse is fine," Bredar said. "We can’t figure out anything wrong with the horse. He went back to the barn. But Flo went down really hard.”

Geroux, originally scheduled to ride in eight races Sunday afternoon at Keeneland, will be off his mounts. He was complaining of soreness in his neck and ribs. X-rays were conducted, Bredar said.

Caton Bredar, Doug's wife and a TVG correspondent, was first to report the fall.

Geroux has risen to prominence in recent years, riding champions such as 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner and 2018 champion filly Monomoy Girl. His mounts have earned more than $10 million in 2019, ranking him 12th among North American jockeys.

Air Strike, seventh most recently in Churchill Downs' Sept. 29 Ack Ack (G3), was nominated for Keeneland's Oct. 26 Fayette (G2).
