Jockey Gary Bain: '62 Going on 19'
At the age of 62, jockey Gary Bain can still find the winner's circle during Gulfstream Park's Championship Meet.
Bain, a fixture on the Florida riding circuit since 1979, won Saturday's second race at Gulfstream aboard Mad Patriot, a 19-1 longshot trained by owner Christine Wasilewski.
Bain, who received applause entering the winner's circle, has won a race every year since 1981, according to Equibase. His lone graded stakes win came aboard Dungaree Dancer in the 1984 Poinsettia at Hialeah Park. Bain, a native of the Bahamas, also won the WHAS Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day in 1996 aboard Hoop Coyote Hoop and the 1983 In Reality Division of the Florida Stallion Stakes on My G.P.
Bain has ridden in 14,285 races and won 1,141.
"I'm 62 going on 19," said Bain with a smile after the race. "I do a lot of galloping in the morning (to stay in shape)."
Bain had success in the 1980s and 90s at Calder riding for trainers Nathan Kelley and Harold Rose. "They did a lot for me," Bain said.
