Jockey Edgard Zayas escapes serious injury in fall
Jockey Edgard Zayas was hospitalized after a fall at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, but he sustained no serious injuries or broken bones.
Agent Tito Fuentes told Horse Racing Nation on Monday that Zayas has a "micro fracture" in his jaw, with swelling on the left side of his face. "Other than that, he's good," Fuentes said, and the jockey was expected to be released later in the day.
Fuentes wasn't sure when Zayas would return to racing. He's serving a five-day suspension, Fuentes said, "so he doesn't have to rush. It'll be a couple weeks."
The accident, reported Sunday on Twitter by Mike Welsch of Daily Racing Form, occurred when Zayas was aboard Chapalu in the fifth race at Gulfstream Sunday. The fall occurred entering the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile turf race, and Chapalu was not injured.
Stewards conducted an inquiry into the fall and found no reason to alter the order of finish, according to the Equibase chart.
Zayas has 52 wins from 372 starts this year and earnings of $2,264,795. He is atop the jockey standings at Gulfstream with 11 wins, one more than Leonel Reyes and Emisael Jaramillo.
