Jockey Dylan Davis is out indefinitely after Friday injuries
Jockey Dylan Davis is out indefinitely after being injured in an incident during Friday's seventh race at Aqueduct.
According to a statement on X from Keith McCalmont of the NYRA media office, citing Davis's agent Mike Migliore, Davis sustained a broken right collarbone, multiple fractured ribs and a partial collapsed lung.
Near the five-sixteenths mark in the race, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for conditioned $17,500 claimers, Heavyweight Champs fell due to an injury to his left front leg and unseated rider Ricardo Santana Jr., according to the Equibase chart. Tarpaulin struck Santana, fell, and unseated Davis.
Davis was taken to Jamaica Hospital after the incident, according to McCalmont. Santana walked off the course, but was off his mounts for the rest of the day.
Heavyweight Champs was euthanized due to the extent of his leg injury. Tarpaulin was caught by outriders after finishing the course without a jockey, and went on to walk off the track under his own power.
Two other horses, Funny Uncle and Because the Night, checked hard because of the spill. Lane Luzzi remained aboard Funny Uncle, Christopher Elliott stayed atop Because the Night, and both were eased and then walked off the track.
Tarpaulin was claimed out of the race, though the claim was voided according to the Equibase chart for the race.
