Jockey Deshawn Parker has surgery after Tuesday injury
Jockey Deshawn Parker has been sidelined indefinitely after a serious injury before Tuesday's eighth race at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
Four-year-old filly Dabney spooked before the race, an Indiana-bred maiden special weight turf mile. Parker's agent Jimmy McInerney told Marcus Hersh of Daily Racing Form that Dabney landed on Parker, rolled across him and also stepped on him as she was getting back up.
According to a Tweet that Parker posted Wednesday, he had pelvic surgery that went well. A report from Jim Mulvihill of BloodHorse described the surgery in further detail, explaining that he had a plate and screws put into his abdomen, and will have to rest for six weeks before beginning rehabilitation. "He's eager to get to the doctor and see the exact timetable", McInerney told Mulvihill.
Parker has been riding since 1988, and has earned both the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award and the Mike Venezia Award, two prestigious awards for jockeys. In that time he has won 6,123 races and over $84 million in purse money. At the current Horseshoe Indianapolis meet he is sixth in wins with 15. Before that, he checked in fifth at the most recent Fair Grounds meet with 39 victories.
