Australian jockey Dean Holland dies in fall during race
Jockey Dean Holland died Monday after falling in a maiden race at Donald Racecourse in Victoria, Australia.
Coming into the straight in the five-furlong turf sprint, his mount, the 3-year-old gelding Headingly, veered into the rail and unseated Holland. Paramedics treated him after the fall, but could not save him because of the extent of his injuries, according to a release from Racing Victoria. The accident was reported earlier by Alex Wiltshire of Racing Post ANZ Bloodstock.
Another jockey, Alana Kelly, was unseated from Time to Rumble during the incident as well. She escaped without serious injury, according to the Racing Victoria release. Headingley and Time to Rumble als were uninjured.
The rest of the card at Donald was canceled after the fall, which happened in Monday's opener. Racing Victoria also announced that it had, out of respect for Holland and his family, canceled racing at Flemington and Moe on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old Holland, who had been riding since December 2005, won 1,118 races in his career.
Those included two at the Group 1 level: the 2010 Australasian Oaks with Small Minds and the 2023 Newmarket Handicap with In Secret. He won the Newmarket Handicap last month after picking up that mount on race day.
