Jockey Brayan Pena completed a four win Thursday with a narrow score aboard Senator Robert in the $46,345 feature.
Pena’s quadruple vaulted him into a tie with apprentice Evin Roman in the rider standings heading into the final three days of the Los Angeles County Fair meet. Both have 11 victories.
A 4-year-old Sierra Sunset gelding out of the Lord Carson mare Sharoana, Senator Robert tracked the slow pace set by 2-1 second choice Lymebyrd, who was seeking his third win in a row, collared that one in midstretch, then prevailed by a half-length after a hard-fought battle.
Senator Robert, who is owned by Battle Born Racing Stable and Nick Ferrara and trained by Genaro Vallejo, had to survive a stewards’ inquiry into the stretch run before his fourth lifetime win was official.
The 3-1 third choice in the field of six, Senator Robert paid $8.80, $3.40 and $3. He’s banked $136,617.
Lymebyrd, who finished 4 ½ lengths in front of 31-1 shot Plain Wrap, returned $3.80 and $3.00 while the show price on Plain Wrap was $8.
Pena’s four victories came in succession as he scored with Nehemiah in the fourth, Rick’s Dream in the fifth and Poco Suenos in the sixth prior to Senator Robert’s win.
Molly Pearson, who conditions Nehemiah and Poco Suenos, took over the lead in the trainer’s race. She has five wins through nine days, one more than Jeff Bonde.
