Jockey Andre Ramgeet injured his back in a spill Saturday night at Charles Town.

According to a Monday morning Tweet from Julie Ramgeet, Andre's wife and agent, doctors determined that Ramgeet will not need surgery for his injury, which was described as "several fractures in his back" in a GoFundMe posted by Julie on Monday to cover Andre's medical expenses. She said he will need a back brace as well as physical and occupational therapy.

Ramgeet was riding Monkey Wrench in the opener at Charles Town on Saturday, a $15,000 claimer for West Virginia-bred non-winners of two races lifetime, going seven furlongs on the dirt. Ramgeet and Monkey Wrench broke well and set the early pace before disputing at the inside of the leading flight down the backstretch.

Approaching the far turn, a three-wide Red Hot Toddy came in, forcing De's Castle in as well between horses. Monkey Wrench clipped heels with De's Castle, fell, and unseated Ramegeet. Hillbilly Rock, a horse trailing near the rear, then fell over Monkey Wrench according to the Equibase chart for the race, though unlike Monkey Wrench's original fall the second part of the spill was not as clearly visible on replay video.

Ramgeet has been riding since 2013, and has 178 victories in 1,972 career starts, for purse earnings over $3.4 million. He rides regularly at Charles Town, and has a 229: 23-22-21 record on the current meet. Those 23 wins place him in a tie for tenth in the jockey standings as of Monday.
