Jaywalk upsets Covfefe in Belmont's Frizette Stakes

It was as if the rest of the field saw a "don't walk" sign, and the winner kept going. OK, enough with the puns...

Jaywalk continued a big Sunday afternoon for the Servis family when the filly led every call to win the Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park, earning a fees-paid spot in the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Through fractions of 23.62, 45.65 and 1:09.71, Jaywalk, a daughter of Cross Traffic, appeared to strengthen before she hit the wire 5 3/4 lengths in front. The final time for the one-turn mile was 1:34.57 under jockey Joel Rosario.

A race after Jason Servis won the Futurity Stakes, this time younger brother John scored in the Frizette.

"There was a couple of tough horses in here that have run better numbers but you really don't know how far they're going to go," John Servis said, "and if they can sit on a hot pace like that and keep going. I really thought this filly would run all day, and I really didn't think that would be an issue for her."

Jaywalk runs for a partnership of the notable Cash is King and Leonard C. Green. She entered with a black type stakes victory on Aug. 22 in Delaware Park’s White Clay Creek, that one an effort that came from just off the pace.

Brucia La Terra ran second with Cassies Dreamer third in the field of seven 2-year-olds females.

Covfefe, the race favorite who shipped in off a flashy maiden score at Churchill Downs — and who has risen in popularity due to her name, a reference to President Donal Trump and his Twitter account — faded to fourth after turned back by Jaywalk at the top of the stretch.
