January 2024: Turfway, Oaklawn top win price, field size

Now that January 2024 is in the books, let's take a look at track averages for win payoffs, winning favorites and field size. We've broken this out by surface, as often there are interesting differences between the surfaces at a track.

At the top, Turfway Park stands out with an average win payoff of $17.63, which is driven by the high average field size of 9.5 and the low 26 percent winning favorites.

Oaklawn Park led all tracks in terms of field size, with a whopping 9.9 horses per race over 78 races. Interestingly, even with the big fields, favorites won at 37 percent at Oaklawn and the average win was $13.92.

A few tracks are doing very well in terms of turf field sizes. Tampa is averaging 9.7 runners on turf, Fair Grounds and Gulfstream are at 9.0 and Sam Houston is at 8.6.
