Gary Barber’s Jack Milton, last early in a field of seven, swept by the pack on the far outside to win the 27th running of the $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile (G1) by 2 ¼ lengths over Aripeka before a Friday afternoon crowd of 14,069.

Jack Milton gave jockey Javier Castellano his second victory in the race, with his initial victory coming in 2011 aboard Get Stormy. It was Castellano’s third victory of the afternoon and the third for trainer Todd Pletcher.

A Keeneland sales graduate, Jack Milton ran the mile on a turf course rated as “soft” in 1:36.30.

Long On Value led the field through early fractions of :23.89 and :47.42 with Skyring in closest pursuit and Jack Milton at the back of the pack. On the far turn, Castellano angled Jack Milton to the outside and at the quarter pole began picking off horses.

Jack Milton spurted to the lead at the eighth pole and drew off to record his second Keeneland victory. The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of War Front out of the Forty Niner mare Preserver had won the Transylvania (G3) in 2013.

Now a three-time graded stakes winner, Jack Milton improved his record to 15-5-1-5 and increased his earnings to $751,161 with the $180,000 winner’s check.

Jack Milton returned $11.20, $6.20 and $4. Aripeka, ridden by Julien Leparoux, returned $10.40 and $4.20 and finished a head in front of Long On Value, who paid $4 to show under Joel Rosario.

Completing the field in order were Legendary (GB), Za Approval, favored Summer Front and Skyring.

Racing continues Saturday with an 11-race program that begins at 12:35 p.m. ET. Highlighting the card that features four stakes races is the 27th running of the $300,000 Jenny Wiley (G1) for fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the grass. The Jenny Wiley will be the ninth race of the afternoon with a 4:46 post time.
