Donald Dizney's 3-year-old homebred J S Bach broke his maiden impressively Saturday in Gulfstream's second race, drawing off down the stretch to beat 11 others by 8 1/2 lengths while covering 1 1/16 mile in 1:44.61.

Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, J S Bach is a son of Tale of the Cat out of the Pulpit mare Ten Carat Lady who finished second in his debut at 5 1/2 furlongs here Dec. 19.

“He’s a promising colt and we’ve been pleased with the way he’s been training," Pletcher said. "We had high hopes for him going into his first race, but it was just a little short for him and he lost to a nice horse that day. We stretched him out and it seemed like more was what he was looking for.”

Pletcher said he wasn't sure what might be next for J S Bach. "We’ll see how he bounces out of it," he said. "Maybe an allowance race, but I wouldn’t rule out a stake.”
