It's Joseph over Aidan O'Brien as Latrobe wins Irish Derby 2018

It became apparent in the stretch run of Saturday’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby that an O’Brien would win it. But which one?

This time it was the son, Joseph, with brother Donnacha riding, who took the Curragh Racecourse’s Group 1 feature with Latrobe getting up between Rostropovich and heavy favorite Saxon Warrior.

Joseph O’Brien, who formerly rode for his father, Aiden O'Brien, has made quite a name for himself as a conditioner, also winning the Melbourne Cup last year over his dad’s entry.

This time, he scored over two of them, as Aiden trains both the runner-up and third-place finishers.

“It’s unbelievable really,” Joseph O’Brien said. “Donnacha gave him a great ride and went forward when the plan was to drop him in but that was the winning and losing the race. I have so many people to thank but Lloyd and Nick Williams have been very good to me and we’ve loved this horse ever since we got him as a yearling.

Latrobe was off at 16-1 on the United States tote. The Irish-bred son of Camelot was making just his fifth start and entered off a maiden-breaking win on June 9. He had decent runners in his form, including Hunting Horn, who went on to win at last week’s Royal Ascot meeting.
