Irish Sire Marju Pensioned

Marju, an English group I winner and a prominent Irish stallion, has been pensioned at Derrinstown Stud in Ireland because of advanced age.


“Age has finally caught up with him,” said general manager Stephen Collins about the 23-year-old stallion. “He’s been here almost as long as I have and was one of the first horses to stand at Derrinstown. He hasn’t been at his best recently and, after a spectacularly successful stud career like his, he owes us nothing.”


Racing for Sheikh Hamdan, Marju scored his biggest win in the 1991 St. James’s Palace Stakes (Eng-I). That year, he also won the Charles Heidsieck Champagne Craven Stakes (Eng-III) and ran second in the Ever Ready Epsom Derby (Eng-I). He was retired with three wins from seven starts and earnings of $480,591.
