Indiana Jockeys Perform Ice Bucket Challenge

A chain of challenges brought the national ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to Indiana Grand this past week. The valets from the jockey’s quarters accepted the challenge as a group Wednesday, Aug. 20 following the last race in the paddock. Their request to step up was directed to the jockeys at Indiana Grand.

After the third race on the Friday, Aug. 22 racing program, a total of 21 jockeys came to the winner’s circle carrying their own buckets filled with ice and water. After nominating the gate crew, the jockey colonies at Belterra Park, Ellis Park and Presque Isle Downs, and a few personal shout outs from individual jockeys, the group synchronized their challenge in front of both the on track and simulcast crowd.

The past two weeks have been filled with individual challenges from trainers, owners, jockey agents, racing personnel and others affiliated with horse racing. Many of the challenges are well documented on social media sites.

Also stepping up for the cause and the challenge will be Indiana Grand team members. All team members at the facility will carry out two sessions Thursday, Aug. 28 on the apron outside the winner’s circle at both 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The session at 4 p.m. will be held during live racing, providing an audience that will extend outside of Indiana Grand. Team members at Indiana Grand have called out team members at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino to do the same thing for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has spread across the United States in the past few weeks, raising both funds and awareness for the cause. The movement has already raised more than $62.5 million. Donations may be made to the organization by logging onto alsa.org.
