In Due Time will try the Lexington route to Kentucky Derby
One of the colts missing from Wednesday's draw for the three last major Kentucky Derby qualifiers was In Due Time, who has 20 points from his runner-up effort in the Fountain of Youth (G2).
Trainer Kelly Breen told Horse Racing Nation Thursday that the son of Not This Time is "still on the trail" and will be entered in next Saturday's Lexington (G3). The 1 1/16-mile race at Keeneland offers 20-8-4-2 points to the top four finishers and is the last points prep.
With a win, In Due Time's 40 points likely would put him in a tie with other contenders for the Churchill Downs starting gate on May 7. It's complicated, but you can read about the scenarios here.
"We're looking to get him a win," Breen said. "So we thought that this was the easiest spot to get him a win and still be on track, if he runs a big race, to run in the Derby."
In Due Time broke his maiden on debut in July and didn't return until January, when he was third in a Gulfstream allowance at six furlongs. Next came a 5 3/4-length win in another Gulfstream allowance, this one at a mile, followed by his loss to Simplification in the Fountain of Youth.
"He's doing well, he made it to Kentucky today," Breen said Thursday morning. "Shipped well, doing well. Hopefully we get a breeze over the weekend – I know it's a chance of rain the next couple of days – and that should set us up for next Saturday."
