Three impressive first-out maiden winners, Surrender Now, Bonneville Flats and Gorgeous Ginny all rate big chances in Sunday’s $100,000 Landaluce Stakes for2-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs this Sunday at Santa Anita.
Named for the ill-fated undefeated Eclipse Champion 2-year-old filly by Seattle Slew, Landaluce, who was trained by D. Wayne Lukas, won the 1982 Hollywood Lassie by 21 lengths under Laffit Pincay, Jr. Perfect in five starts, four of them stakes, Landaluce, who was owned by Barry Beal and Bob French, was regarded as one of the fastest juvenile fillies of all-time.
Landaluce’s final win came at Santa Anita on Oct. 23, 1982 in the Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes. Following her death due to a viral infection November, 1982, the Hollywood Lassie was renamed for Landaluce the following summer.
SURRENDER NOW: Trained by Peter Miller, she showed good speed from the gate and was a convincing two length winner going five furlongs here on June 9. A Kentucky-bred daughter of the Tiznow stallion Morning Line, she was purchased for $220,000 by Gary Hartunian’s Rockingham Ranch at the Barrett’s March 2-year-old in Training Sale three months ago.Based at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, she’s had two half mile works since her maiden win, the most recent a 47.40 move on June 21.
BONNEVILLE FLATS: Originally named “Flat Drunk,” this Kentucky-bred filly by Flat Out was purchased privately following her half length maiden win going 4 ½ furlongs at Keeneland on April 13, a race in which she surged late to win going away in a field of eight. Currently owned by Amerman Racing, LLC and trained by David Hofmans, she has seven works on her local tab dating back to May 13. In her most recent drill this morning, Hofmans had her out for a three furlong spin in 37.20.
GORGEOUS GINNY: Trained by Robertino Diodoro, this California-bred daughter of Take Charge Indy was much the best as the even money favorite versus state-bred maidens going 4 ½ furlongs here on May 4, winning by 5 ¼ lengths in 52 seconds flat. Owned by Randy Howg, she’s had five works since her maiden win, including a bullet five furlongs 59.40 on June 17—best of 57 at the distance.
