Less than a week after winning the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Gun Runner, trainer Steve Asmussen unveiled an impressive 2-year-old, Principe Guilherme, with a debut victory at Churchill Downs.

The Three Chimneys owned son of Tapit broke a bit slowly, but found the lead very quickly and drew off to a 6 ¼ length victory in the seven-furlong maiden special weight that went in 1:24.07. The $600,000 Fasig-Tipton November 2015 weanling purchase was sent off as the 7.50-1 fourth choice.

Principe Guilherme is the first foal of the grade 1 winner Aubby K. She was trained by Ralph Nicks and was the winner of the Humana Distaff at Churchill. Her career was cut short by a training injury at Saratoga in 2013. She was sold for $2,400,000 at Fasig-Tipton November 2015, in foal with a full brother of Principe Guilherme.
