The Super Screener shows us how to bet this week's 2017 Pacific Classic:
Well, it is clear that trainer Bob Baffert will win this race but will it be #2 Collected or #8 Arrogate? Keep in mind that Bob Baffert has said that when he enters two or more horses in a race, he considers those entrants to be equal in their ability to win the race. #2 Collected has matured into a very classy 4 year-old that is on a three-race progression since returning to racing after nearly a year layoff. He absolutely blew away his overmatched competition in the G3 Precisionist winning that race by a monster 14 lengths crushing #3 Accelerate in the process. He certainly is in here to ensure a brisk pace for stablemate and top world-ranked, #8 Arrogate, but this added distance does become a question. Regardless, he’s the controlling pace force here and that makes him a top win contender.
What the heck happened to #8 Arrogate in his return from his 7-race win streak facing the world’s best? No plausible explanation has been forwarded to date but if you watch that race, you can readily see that #8 Arrogate was completely disinterested in racing. It’s not like his amazing ability had suddenly left him but, instead, he just simply was not interested in applying himself. Allegedly he is back in the bit now and working up a storm to this race. There is no reason to doubt that he will return to that incredible form we have seen before...but his stablemate, #2 Collected is quite formidable here and should not be dismissed.
#7 Curlin Road is a very live long shot to use under the Baffert pair in your Exactas. This Doug O’Neill-trained 4 year-old is getting good at the right time and has another move forward ready to deploy in this race. Screener rates high that cut back in distance and while he faces so much tougher here, he will pass tired horses late as this added distance will actually be a big plus and will enhance his efforts for a better-than-expected outcome at a big price.
#3 Accelerate ran the race of a lifetime scoring a huge top last out when defeating #8 Arrogate. Screener is projecting a regression here at that low price making him a vulnerable favorite. He loves Del Mar going 3 for 3 in the win column but added distance becomes a question.
