Hawthorne cancels Sunday card because of extreme heat
Hawthorne canceled racing on Sunday due to a forecast of extreme heat. The seven races on Saturday's card will be brought back as extras for Thursday's card, which will be drawn Sunday.
The cancellation was annouced by text message to Chicago horsemen.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service predicted a high of 97 on Sunday in Stickney, Illinois, with heat indices as high as 105. The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for the area that will remain in effect through 1 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
The featured race on Sunday's card was an allowance-optional claiming race for fillies and mares aged three and up, sprinting six furlongs on the dirt. The 5-2 morning-line favorite was Beehive, an Illinois-bred 4-year-old trained by Michele Boyce. She was entered for her first start back since running third behind millionaire Oeuvre and Chicago Stakes (G2) entrant Gray Lightning in the Third Chance Stakes on May 18 at Hawthorne.
Racing at Hawthorne will resume Thursday with first post at 3:40 p.m. EDT.
