Horse of the Year Minding Tops 2016 Cartier Racing Award Winners
{{monthName}} {{day}}, {{year}} {{hour12}}:{{minuteTwoDigit}}{{dayPeriod}}
Minding, the three-year-old Galileo filly, owned by a Coolmore partnership, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, was a five-time Group One winner in 2016 with victories, at distances ranging from a mile to a mile and a half, in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas, Investec Oaks, Sea The Stars Pretty Polly Stakes, Qatar Nassau Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO).
Minding achieved Cartier Racing Awards' glory last year too, as she was crowned Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly in 2015 when she enjoyed two G1 victories. Her rivals in the Cartier Horse Of The Year category were Almanzor, Found, Postponed and recent Breeders' Cup Turf winner Highland Reel. Both Found and Highland Reel are stable companions of Minding.
Minding also takes the honours in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly category, ahead of Alice Springs, Quiet Reflection and La Cressonniere.
This year a new record is set at the Cartier Racing Awards, with five of the eight equine awards going to horses owned by Coolmore partnerships, consisting in the main of owners Sue Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor. All five of these award winners are trained by Aidan O'Brien, at Ballydoyle in Ireland, who gains the accolade of Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit.
Coolmore's Found, who led home a remarkable 1-2-3 for O'Brien and the owners in Europe's richest race, last month's G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, is named Cartier Older Horse. The other contenders for Cartier Older Horse Award were Postponed, Limato and Highland Reel.
Order Of St George, winner of the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, is another success for Coolmore and O'Brien, with the four-year-old landing the Cartier Stayer Award ahead of Quest For More, Vazirabad and Sheikzayedroad.
The fifth award to go to a Coolmore/O'Brien horse, in a stellar year, is Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt, won by Churchill. The Galileo colt finished a superb campaign with Group One victories in two of Europe's best juvenile contests - the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes and the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. The other nominees in this category were Caravaggio, The Last Lion and Mehmas. (Please remember the embargo).
Almanzor takes the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award. Owned by Ecurie Antonio Caro and Gerard Augustin-Normand, the son of Wootton Basset was superbly handled by Jean-Claude Rouget, who trains in South-West France, to win three Group One contests - the French Classic, the Prix du Jockey Club, the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes and the QIPCO Champion Stakes. The other Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt nominees were Galileo Gold, Harzand and The Gurkha.
Two fillies make history at the 26th Cartier Racing Awards. Firstly, Quiet Reflection becomes the first three-year-old filly to win the Cartier Sprinter Award. This follows her victories at the highest level in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and the 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock Park. Owned by Ontoawinner, Hubert Strecker and Karl and Elaine Buke, the Karl Burke-trained Showcasing filly gains the Cartier Sprinter Award in tight finish ahead of Limato, Mecca's Angel and The Tin Man.
Lady Aurelia is the other history-maker, as she is the first horse trained in the USA to win a Cartier Racing Award. Following a breathtaking all-the-way win in the G2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and victory in the G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville, she captures the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award ahead of Rhododendron, Brave Anna and Roly Poly. Lady Aurelia is owned by Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton and Peter Leidel and trained by Wesley Ward.
The Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to Aidan O'Brien. Even by his own exemplary standards, the trainer, based at Ballydoyle in Ireland, has enjoyed a magnificent 2016, being responsible for 22 winners at Group/Grade One level.
During the past quarter century, the 47-year-old has rewritten the record books, enjoying more than 250 Group/Grade One winners on the Flat worldwide and he stands at the very summit of his profession.
Harry Herbert, Cartier's Racing Consultant, commented: "I would like to extend my congratulations to the Coolmore team on the phenomenal achievement of gaining a record five awards at the 26th annual Cartier Racing Awards.
"Minding and Found are brilliant fillies, while Order Of St George is a stayer out of the top drawer and Churchill's performances bode well for 2017.
"Aidan O'Brien's achievements, with Minding, Found, Order of St George and Churchill plus many others in 2016 and during the last 25 years, speak for themselves and this outstanding trainer richly deserves the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit.
"It is thrilling to see the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award go to the American-trained Lady Aurelia, emphasising how international racing has become.
"The three-year-old filly Quiet Reflection is a worthy winner of the Cartier Sprint Award, while Almanzor's dominance at 10 furlongs is testament to superb handling."
Aidan O'Brien - Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit
Aidan O'Brien is the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit winner for 2016.
"He's a quick learner, very intelligent, a popular young man. His industry and dedication are tremendous. I'd have done anything short of marrying him to keep him working for me."
Fine praise indeed and when those words come from the mouth of a man no less than trainer Jim Bolger, then they have added resonance. When applied to the phenomenal talent that is Aidan Patrick O'Brien, Bolger's sentiments have proved entirely prophetic.
Champion trainer on the Flat 19 times in Ireland (including this year - 1997 & from 1999-2015), on five occasions in Jump racing in Ireland and five times Champion trainer on the Flat in Britain (2001, 2002, 2007, 2008 & 2016), Aidan O'Brien has done it all. It is also not just the quantity of winners trained but the quality - 25 British Classic wins, 34 in Ireland and over 250 Group One victories on the Flat worldwide.
Born in County Wexford on October 16, 1969, one of Stella and Denis O'Brien's six children, Aidan O'Brien has been nothing short of a phenomenon. His father was a farmer and prolific point-to-point jockey and Aidan left school in the fifth form to work for Curragh trainer P J Finn.
He soon made the move to Jim Bolger's yard in County Carlow, where he would enjoy the tutelage of one of the greatest mentors in the business. It was while working for Bolger that O'Brien met Annemarie Crowley, daughter of the highly-respected trainer and horse dealer Joe Crowley. Annemarie became his wife - they have four children - and is an integral part of his success.
A successful amateur rider who took the Irish Jump amateur riders' title in 1993/94, Aidan and Annemarie began training in their own right in 1992 at Piltown in County Kilkenny, with the licence originally in Annemarie's name. The young couple made an immediate impact on the Irish Jump scene, with Annemarie crowned champion Jump trainer in the 1992/93 season, the first woman to achieve the feat.
In May, 1993, Aidan and Annemarie celebrated the arrival of their first child, Joseph, and the following month Aidan took over the training licence at Piltown. The first winner in his own name came at Tralee on June 7, 1993, when Wandering Thoughts took a seven-furlong handicap on the Flat.
Running a highly-successful mixed yard, with the emphasis on Jump horses, O'Brien rapidly established himself as Ireland's brightest young training talent. He was crowned champion Jump trainer in Ireland in the 1993/94, 1994/95, 1995/96, 1996/7 and 1997/98 seasons.
O'Brien enjoyed a first winner in Britain when Urubande landed the Grade One Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle at the 1996 Cheltenham Festival. The great hurdler Istabraq, owned by J P McManus and well campaigned by O'Brien, will always be remembered as his greatest Jump horse, with 23 victories from 29 starts over hurdles including three Champion Hurdles (1998, 1999 and 2000) at Cheltenham.
His first Group race winner on the Flat was another landmark, with Dancing Sunset in the 1994 G3 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh. That same year also saw another O'Brien, the legendary Vincent O'Brien (no relation), finally call time on his career which had seen him conquer every summit in racing, on the Flat and previously in Jump racing. The outstanding training facility, Ballydoyle in County Tipperary, where Vincent O'Brien trained needed a new inmate. Vincent's eldest son David had enjoyed an outstanding if brief career as a trainer in the 1980s but retired to start a new life making wine, while another of Vincent's sons, Charles, was already training in his own right at the Curragh.
Aidan O'Brien's talents had not gone unnoticed by Coolmore supremo John Magnier, who presciently identified the Piltown handler as the man to take Ballydoyle into the 21st century.
Magnier recalled: "What first attracted me to Aidan was quite simple. Every day in Coolmore I pick up the papers and give them a good read.
"Every day this fella O'Brien was training a winner, then it became two winners and then three. It was clearly more than just a trend. It became quite extraordinary."
Initially continuing to train at Piltown and also at Ballydoyle, it didn't take long for Aidan O'Brien to apply his talents to the beautifully-bred Flat horses entrusted to his care by Coolmore.
In 1997, he saddled the winner of three of the five Irish Classics, with Desert King taking the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby, and Classic Park landing the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The following year, his first British Classics came courtesy of King Of Kings in the 2,000 Guineas and Shahtoush in the Oaks.
Even if there was no family relationship between Aidan and Vincent O'Brien, the correlation of rare genius was not too difficult to make. As noted journalist Hugh McIlvanney noted in 1997: "Although there is no blood connection, the two men seem naturally linked by inspiration."
If O'Brien's success in the late 20th century showed that Ballydoyle was back on the map, then the story of the 21st century has been one of increasing domination of European horseracing.
The year 2000 saw O'Brien saddle the amazingly tough Giant's Causeway to five Group One successes, while a first Epsom Derby came in 2001 courtesy of Galileo, now Europe's pre-eminent stallion. Galileo also landed the Irish Derby and Ascot's King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2001, which would prove to a truly annus mirabilis for O'Brien, with 23 Group One victories on the Flat in total. This was also the year he landed his first UK trainers' championship, a feat not achieved by an Irish-based trainer since Vincent O'Brien in 1977.
Superstars in 2002 were five-time Group One scorer Rock Of Gibraltar, bred by the O'Briens under the Whisperview Trading banner, and High Chaparral, who gave him a second Epsom Derby as well as a Breeders' Cup Turf - a race the horse would win again in 2003.
Year on year, the top-notch performers keep on coming with Yeats (the only horse to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot four times), George Washington, Henrythenavigator, Duke Of Marmalade, Dylan Thomas, So You Think, Starspanglebanner, Camelot, Australia, and St Nicholas Abbey among the very best.
This year has been another vintage one for O'Brien, with 22 Group One victories on the Flat so far, headed by an unprecedented 1-2-3 in Europe's richest race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, with Found, Highland Reel and Order Of St George. Minding has proven to be an outstanding three-year-old filly, winning five Group One races in 2016 to add to the two she achieved in 2015, while very promising juveniles Caravaggio and Churchill offer significant hope of further top-flight success in 2017. This year also saw O'Brien bring his total number of winners at Royal Ascot to 55.
So much success has never remotely made O'Brien complacent. As he once noted at a stable open day: "I had to learn by my mistakes and I made a lot of them."
There is also no remote whiff of arrogance about O'Brien, with John Magnier remarking: "Dealing with him at Ballydoyle, you notice how he keeps everything simple. He has the most logical of minds and has never become swollen-headed. He takes just the same size in hats as when his first walked in the door."
For all his success and dedication to horseracing, O'Brien has also been a man devoted to his family. He and Annemarie are the proud parents of four children. Eldest son Joseph became a leading jockey, riding two Epsom Derby winners (Camelot and Australia). He is now following in his parents' footsteps as a trainer at Piltown and has already enjoyed top-flight success. Youngest son Donnacha is rapidly establishing himself as a jockey, while daughters Ana and Sarah have also ridden winners.
Aidan O'Brien is truly the all-round horseman of his age.

MINDING (IRE)
3 b f Galileo (IRE) - Lillie Langtry (IRE) (Danehill Dancer (IRE))
2016 Form: 1211131 Owners: Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier & Michael Tabor
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt
Minding wins the Cartier Horse Of The Year & Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly Awards after a glittering season that saw her win five Group One prizes, with Ryan Moore up, over three different distances between May and October.
The daughter of Galileo, out of dual Group One winner Lillie Langtry, is now a three-time winner at the Cartier Racing Awards, having taken the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award in 2015 when she won on three of her five starts, culminating with a pair of Group One victories in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and the Dubai Fillies' Mile at Newmarket.
Minding began 2016 at the highest level as she was pitched straight into Classic company for her seasonal debut in the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas over a mile at Newmarket on May 1. Starting the 11/10 favourite for the British Classic, she travelled well and powered home by three and a half lengths from stable companions Ballydoyle and Alice Springs, handing owners and trainer an historic 1-2-3.
A follow-up in Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas looked little more than a formality, but unfortunately Minding banged her head leaving the stalls. Despite this, she still only went down by a head to Jet Setting.
The first Friday in June saw Minding make her first and, to date, only start over a mile and a half when she contested the other British Classic for fillies, the Investec Oaks, at Epsom Downs. Despite having far from the smoothest passages as the field entered the straight, she proved her class with an ultimately very comfortable length and three-quarters victory over Architecture.
Later the same month, Minding took on older opposition for the first time in the Group One Sea The Stars Pretty Polly Stakes over 10 furlongs at the Curragh on June 26. Travelling supremely well throughout, she had very little difficulty in beatingBocca Baciata by four and a half lengths.
Glorious Goodwood on July 30 was next on Minding's agenda and once again she raced over 10 furlongs in the Group One Qatar Nassau Stakes. A red-hot 1/5 favourite, she had little trouble in dispensing of her four rivals, coming home a length and a quarter in front of Queen's Trust, who would go on to win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Having earned a break during the month of August, Minding was next seen out when taking on the colts for the first time in the Group One QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on September 10. After suffering some early interference, she was never quite travelling as well as she had done in her races earlier in the season but still ran a cracking race to come home third, beaten three and a half lengths, behind the French-trained Almanzor and her year-older stable companion Found (who are also both winners at the 2016 Cartier Racing Awards).
For her final start of 2016, Minding made the drop back in distance to a mile for the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO) at Ascot on British Champions Day, October 15. A very strong field included QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Galileo Gold, Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Awtaad and Ribchester, who had taken Deauville's Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard - Jacques Le Marois.
Always in a prominent position, Minding was sent into the lead a quarter of a mile from home and held on courageously to score by half a length from Ribchester. It was the perfect ending to a remarkable year for a truly outstanding filly. Minding could remain in training as a four-year-old next year.
Cartier Older Horse
FOUND (IRE)
4 b f Galileo (IRE) - Red Evie (IRE) (Intikhab (USA))
2016 Form: 3122222123 Owners: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Sue Magnier
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Roncon, Wynatt & Chelston
Found takes the award for Cartier Older Horse following her brilliant success in Europe's most prestigious race, the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
The four-year-old smashed the 30-year-old mile and half course record at Chantilly and led home an incredible one-two-three for trainer Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Sue Magnier.
It was just reward for a wonderful campaign that was defined by consistency and durability at the highest level. Since finishing third in the Moyglare Stud Stakeson just her second start, Found has been out of the first three only once in 16 starts at Group One level and that was through no fault of her own when badly hampered in last year's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
The Galileo filly's resilience was underlined following that defeat when, in the space of the next 27 days, she was runner-up to Fascinating Rock in the G1 QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot before shipping to Keeneland and exacted revenge on Golden Horn in a thrilling G1 Breeders' Cup Turf. She finished third in the same American race this year.
Connections focused this year's campaign around the latter half of the season and, in particular, a second tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Found started her season with three starts at the Curragh and had Fascinating Rock back in third on the second of those outings in the G3 Mooresbridge Stakes on May 2. She was no match for that rival in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup three weeks later and that defeat started a streak of five consecutive seconds at G1 level, including behind My Dream Boat in the Princes Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and stablemate Seventh Heaven in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks.
She narrowly failed to give 4lb and a beating to Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt, Almanzor, in a top-class renewal of the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in September, with Cartier Horse Of The Year Minding, Highland Reel and dual Derby winner Harzand behind.
Attention turned to Europe's richest race, the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She was the choice of Coolmore's retained rider Ryan Moore ahead of O'Brien's other runners; Highland Reel, winner of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Gold Cup victor Order Of St George.
Moore settled Found on the inside and the pair quickened into a clear lead with two furlongs to run after spying a charmed run between rivals. Highland Reel closed the winning margin to a length and three quarters, with Order Of St George a length and a half further back in third. The winning time of 2m 23.61s shaved over half a second off Bering's track record (2m 24.10s) in the 1986 Prix du Jockey Club.
After Chantilly, Found made two further appearances. She was again runner-up to Almanzor, this time in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on October 15. She rounded off the campaign by coming home a staying-on third behind stable companion Highland Reel who made all in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita on November 5.
Found has the requisite blend of speed and stamina for championship competition, emphasised by the fact she is a G1 winner at three different distances. These attributes are drawn from her pedigree. She is the highest rated daughter of champion sire Galileo to ever race and the fourth foal of top-class miler Red Evie, who herself beat the boys when winning Newbury's Lockinge Stakes for trainer Michael Bell.

ALMANZOR (FR)
3 b c Wootton Bassett - Darkova (Maria's Mon (USA))
2016 Form: 311111 Owners: Ecurie Antonio Caro & Gerard Augustin-Normand
Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget FR Breeder: Haras D'Etreham
Almanzor receives the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award following an outstanding season that yielded five victories including major Group One prizes in France, Ireland and the UK.
The son of Wootton Bassett, owned by Ecurie Antonio Caro & Gerard Augustin-Normand, displayed a high, if not spectacular, level of form as a juvenile, winning three races in the provinces before ending his season with a creditable seventh when upped to G1 level for the Criterium International.
Jean-Claude Rouget's charge made his seasonal return in the G3 Prix de Fontainebleau over a mile at Chantilly in April - one of the traditional trials for the French Classic, the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, over the same course and distance the following month. Almanzor produced his best work late on as he stayed on to finish third behind Dicton, who would subsequently finish third in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.
Connections opted against the mile Classic and instead decided to take the colt down the Prix du Jockey Club route. He returned to Chantilly for the nine-furlong G3 Prix de Guiche on May 10, when he made all of the running for a convincing two-length success.
Despite winning a trial with such authority, Almanzor was sent off a 19/1 chance on the PMU in a wide-open renewal of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, the French equivalent of the Derby, over an extended 10 furlongs at Chantilly on June 5.
Given a patient ride by veteran jockey Jean-Bernard Eyquem, Almanzor stayed on powerfully to take the lead entering the final furlong before quickening clear to beat Zarak by a length and a half, with a further length and three-quarters back to his Prix de Fontainebleau conqueror Dicton in third.
Almanzor was given a well-deserved break following his Prix du Jockey Club success and returned to action at Deauville on August 15 for the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano - Haras du Logis Saint-Germain over a mile and a quarter.
With Eyquem again in the saddle, Almanzor once ran on strongly to score by a length, with Zarak taking second again to confirm the form of the Prix du Jockey Club.
A bid for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was not immediately discounted afterwards and Almanzor continued to hold an entry in the 12-furlong showpiece until the eve of the race. But with connections also responsible for the unbeaten dual Classic-winning filly La Cressonniere, Almanzor continued to race over a mile and a quarter and headed to Leopardstown for the G1 QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes on September 10. A stellar line-up greeted the French raider, with nine individual G1 winners featuring among a formidable field in a contest billed as "the race of the season".
Settled near the rear of the field by Christophe Soumillon, Almanzor produced a brilliant turn of foot as he swooped down the centre of the course, readily passing proven G1 winners New Bay and Minding, before accelerating again to beat Found by three quarters of a length.
Continuing with the plan of keeping Almanzor at 10 furlongs, the colt bypassed the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and lined up in the G1 QIPCO British Champion Stakes at Ascot on October 15, where he took on Found, who herself had captured the French middle-distance highlight 13 days earlier.
Under typically-confident Soumillon ride, Almanzor cruised up in the straight to put the race to bed in a matter of strides, with only his old adversary Found offering any serious resistance. Almanzor powered clear inside the final furlong to gain a decisive two-length victory and provide his trainer with a second Champion Stakes following Literato, who took the spoils at Newmarket nine years earlier.
Almanzor is due to stay in training as a four-year-old next year and could further cement his reputation as a champion, with a step up to a mile and a half under consideration for the brilliant colt.
Cartier Sprinter
QUIET REFLECTION (GB)
3 b f Showcasing - My Delirium (Haafhd)
2016 Form: 111317 Owners: Ontoawinner, Strecker & Burke
Trainer: Karl Burke Breeder: Springcombe Park Stud
Quiet Reflection becomes the first three-year-old filly in the history of the Cartier Racing Awards to receive the accolade for Cartier Sprinter after a superb season that included a pair of emphatic Group One wins.
Purchased for just £44,000 by her Yorkshire-based trainer and part-owner Karl Burke at Doncaster's Breeze Up Sales in April, 2015, the daughter of Showcasing won three of her four starts as a juvenile, ending her two-year-old campaign with a dominant victory in the G3 Dubai Cornwallis Stakes over five furlongs at Newmarket.
She made her seasonal return in the six-furlong G3 Prix Sigy at Chantilly, France, on April 10, when she battled gamely to score by a head in testing conditions.
Quiet Reflection continued over six furlongs for the G2 118Bet Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park on May 28, a leading trial for the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Held up by her regular jockey Dougie Costello, the filly travelled sweetly throughout and quickened impressively to hit the front a furlong from home before storming clear for a facile three and three-quarter length success over subsequent G1 runner-up Donjuan Triumphant.
Following such a commanding display, connections opted to keep Quiet Reflection at six furlongs for the G1 Commonwealth Cup, confined to three-year-olds, on June 17, instead of lining up against older opposition over a furlong shorter in the G1 King's Stand Stakes.
With good-to-soft ground ruling out top US filly Acapulco, Quiet Reflection was sent off a warm 7/4 favourite for the Commonwealth Cup. She once again proved far too good for her rivals as she delivered a withering challenge inside the final furlong to beat Kachy by a length and provide Dougie Costello with a first G1 success and Karl Burke with an initial win at the highest level in Britain.
Quiet Reflection was pitched against older opposition for the first time in the G1 Darley July Cup, also over six furlongs, at Newmarket's Moet & Chandon July Festival on July 9. Taking on 17 rivals, Quiet Reflection stayed on well after being covered up in the middle of the pack but could not quite match the pace of Limato on the good to firm ground and was edged out of second place by Suedois.
Connections were delighted by Quiet Reflection's performance and, following a mid-season break, she returned to Haydock Park for the six-furlong G1 32Red Sprint Cup. Quiet Reflection revelled in the soft ground, moving up to take the advantage approaching the final furlong before staying on well for a decisive verdict over The Tin Man, with Darley July Cup runner-up Suedois back in third.
Quiet Reflection ended her season in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint, once again over six furlongs, at Ascot on October 15, when she failed to show her customary turn of foot after a long season and came home seventh, beaten four and a half lengths, behind The Tin Man.
She is set to stay in training next season and could start her campaign with an appearance in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai.

ORDER OF ST GEORGE (IRE)
4 b c Galileo (IRE) - Another Storm (USA) (Gone West (USA))
2016 Form: 111234 Owners: Michael Tabor/Derrick Smith/Sue Magnier/Lloyd Williams
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Paget Bloodstock
Order Of St George gains up the Cartier Stayer Award following a remarkable season that saw the four-year-old win the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and finish third over a mile shorter in Europe's premier middle-distance contest, the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
The Galileo colt, trained by Aidan O'Brien for a Coolmore partnership that also includes leading Australian owner Lloyd Williams, had already proven to be a top staying prospect as a three-year-old with some impressive displays, headed by an 11-length success in the 2015 G1 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger.
He made his first appearance of this year in the Listed Saval Beg Stakes over a mile and three-quarters at Leopardstown on June 5, when he easily accounted for his four rivals.
Order Of St George headed to Royal Ascot 13 days later for the G1 Gold Cup, run this year in honour of the Queen's 90th Birthday, which attracted a bumper field of 17 runners.
Racing over the marathon trip of two and a half miles for the first time, Order Of St George stayed on powerfully after being taken wide to avoid trouble by Ryan Moore and stormed clear inside the final furlong for a comprehensive three-length victory.
Order Of St George was given a break following his Royal Ascot exertions and the colt returned to action on August 20 with a routine victory under hands and heels in the G3 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger Trial over a mile and three quarters at the Curragh.
Having won the race 12 months earlier and confirmed his wellbeing by winning the trial, the G1 Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger, also run over 14 furlongs at the Curragh, on September 11 had all the hallmarks of a proverbial penalty kick for Order Of St George and he was duly sent off 1/7 favourite for the Classic.
But he was unable to catch front-runner Wicklow Brave in the closing stages, going down by half a length to the talented dual-purpose performer, who had previously placed at G1 level on the Flat and over hurdles as well as scoring at the Cheltenham Festival.
Order Of St George entered quarantine for the G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup, for which he would have undoubtedly carried top-weight, but connections decided to drop back to a mile and a half for an audacious tilt at Europe's richest race, the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on October 2.
Always towards the head of affairs under Frankie Dettori, Order Of St George rallied gamely in the straight to come home third behind Found and Highland Reel as trainer Aidan O'Brien enjoyed an unprecedented 1-2-3 in the championship contest.
Order Of St George returned to Ascot for the G2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup over two miles on October 15, when he stayed on to finish a close fourth behind Sheikhzayedroad in a steadily-run race. Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt

2 b c Galileo (IRE) - Meow (IRE) (Storm Cat (USA))
2016 Form:311111 Owners: Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Sue Magnier
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE Breeder: Liberty Bloodstock
Churchill takes the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award following a superb campaign that saw the son of Galileo win on five of his six starts, with two of those coming at Group One level.
Out of the Queen Mary Stakes runner-up Meow, Churchill's grand-dam was the top sprinter Airwave. He made his debut at the Curragh on May 22 in a six-furlong maiden. Starting the 2/1 favourite, it took a while for the penny to drop but once it did, Churchill came home a fast-finishing third.
The Listed Chesham Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot, June 18, was Churchill's next outing and the step up to seven furlongs proved to be exactly what the colt needed as he recorded an authoritative half-length victory. He was moved up progressively in class as the season progressed, with all his four subsequent starts also coming at seven furlongs.
On July 21, he landed Leopardstown's Group Three Japan Racing Association Tyros Stakes before moving up to Group Two level for the Galileo European Breeders' Fund Futurity Stakes at the Curragh on August 21, when he was the most impressive two-length winner.
Ireland's premier two-year-old race then beckoned, the Group One Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh on September 11. Churchill could not have been more impressive as he stormed to a four and a half-length victory over dual Group Two winner Mehmas.
Churchill made the trip to Newmarket on October 8 for what is often the defining juvenile race of the year, the Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes. The high-class field included Rivet, winner of the Group Two Champagne Stakes (and subsequent winner of the Group One Racing Post Trophy) as well as Group Two Gimcrack Stakes victor Blue Point. Despite taking a keen hold and not enjoying the clearest of runs, Churchill took up the running entering the final furlong with Ryan Moore up and stayed on well to overhaul his stable companion Lancaster Bomber. He scored by a length and a quarter with the minimum of fuss.

2 b f Scat Daddy (USA) - D´Wildcat Speed (USA) (Forest Wildcat (USA))
2016 Form: 1113 Owner: Stonestreet Stables/George Bolton/Peter Leidel
Trainer: Wesley Ward USA Breeder: Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC
Lady Aurelia creates history by becoming the first US-trained horse to win a Cartier Racing Award. Successful three times in four starts, the Scat Daddy filly takes the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award.
Out of D'Wildcat Speed, a champion filly in Puerto Rico, Lady Aurelia made her debut over four and a half furlongs at Keeneland, USA, on April 21. A devastating display saw her make all the running and come home seven and a half lengths clear, setting a new course record in the process for good measure.
Her trailblazing trainer Wesley Ward, the first US-based handler to win a race at Royal Ascot, subsequently named the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes at the Royal meeting as Lady Aurelia's next target.
Lady Aurelia duly lined up in the five-furlong Queen Mary Stakes on June 15 and treated the racing public with one of the most stunning performances ever seen at Royal Ascot. Partnered by Frankie Dettori, she led all the way and powered clear of her field inside the final furlong to score by seven lengths.
Any doubts that Lady Aurelia would only be effective at the minimum trip were quickly dispelled on her next outing when she was stepped up in both trip and class for the Group One Darley Prix Morny over six furlongs at Deauville on August 21. Again blazing the trail from the front, she showed her courage by staying on well close home to score by a comfortable three quarters of a length from Alrahma.
Her only defeat of the season came at Newmarket on September 24, when she was third in the Group One Connolly's Red Mills Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs. After leading as normal, she weakened close home and was eased by Frankie Dettori when her chance had passed. It was subsequently discovered that Lady Aurelia had broken a blood vessel during the race.
European racegoers could well be treated to seeing Lady Aurelia in action again in 2017, with the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot a likely target. Winners by year at the Cartier Racing Awards
