Sadly, not all is good news on a day that should be festive at Pimlico Race Course. Two horses have lost their lives following undercard races at the 2016 Preakness Stakes.

Pramedya had to be euthanized after suffering a broken left-front cannon bone in today's fourth race. Daniel Centeno, who was thrown off his mount during the injury, was taken to the hospital with a broken clavicle. Making the story even sadder, Pramedya was a four-year-old filly owned by Gretchen and Roy Jackson, who lost their unbeaten Kentucky Derby star, Barbaro, several months after injuring himself ten years ago at the beginning of the 2006 Preakness.

The heatbreaking story came just three races after Homeboykris, the winner of the first race on the card, collapsed and died shortly after visiting the Pimlico winner’s circle. The Grade 1 winner passed of an apparent heart attack. A nine-year-old gelding, ths son of Roman Ruler was making his 64th lifetime start.
