Hit The Road took his time getting to the front of the pack on Friday at Del Mar, but the son of More than Ready made a surge with one furlong to go and cruised to a victory in the Oceanside Stakes.
For most of the race, up until the field entered the final stretch, Silardi was the horse in front, jumping off to a hot start and staying half a length ahead of the field most of the way, with Margot’s Boy in hot pursuit on the outside.
After the final turn, Hit the Road made his move, splitting Silardi and Margot’s Boy who both finished outside of the top four. The win was the second straight for Hit the Road, whose last stakes race was a fourth place finish in the Grade 3 Cecil B. Demille Stakes, also at Del Mar.
“I was happy when I could take the rail right away,” jockey Umbeto Rispoli said. “That probably was the key today, the track was pretty fast, you don’t want to stay too far back.”
Hit the Road is trained by Dan Blacker and was ridden by Rispoli, who picked up his third win of the day. He is owned by DK Racing.
“I’m just thrilled with the way the horse ran,” Blacker said. “He just broke so well and Umberto did such a great job putting him into a good spot early and from there it was just keeping our fingers crossed that something would open up at the end.”
For the win, Hit the Road paid out $5.20, along with $3.60 for place and $2.80 for show. In second place, Kanderel paid out $13.20 and 8.60 and in third, Ajourneytofreedom paid $9.40.
