Hawthorne considers moving to 1 race day per week

The court presiding over Hawthorne’s bankruptcy case will consider Tuesday whether to extend until the end of August the timeline for prospective buyers to prepare offers to purchase the property.

If approved, this is expected to benefit interested parties by allowing more time for thoughtful consideration of Hawthorne’s assets. However, given the shortage of operational funds available, the track has proposed to eliminate Thursday racing each week in order to keep racing through the end of August.

The court plans to rule on this matter during a hearing on Tuesday.

Essentially, this plan would trade eight days of racing in July for four days in July and four days in August. This change would not take effect until July, meaning there would be one more Thursday of racing in June.

If this plan comes to fruition and the schedule switches to once a week, Hawthorne plans to bolster Sunday racing with more races. The current schedule features seven races each Thursday and seven races each Sunday. With racing confined to Sundays, Hawthorne will attempt to host 12 races each Sunday in July and August.
