Shotgun Kowboy, an earner of more than $1.5 million, has been retired because of a sesamoid fracture, C.R. Trout, the gelding’s breeder, owner and trainer told Oaklawn Park's publicity staff Friday morning.

The son of Kodiak Kowboy surpassed $1 million in career earnings with a Feb. 3, 2018, allowance victory at Oaklawn Park and went on from there to become a two-time graded winner of the Lone Star Park Handicap (G3); earlier in his career, Shotgun Kowboy also won the Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park, where he made nearly half of 40 career starts.

Shotgun Kowboy won 15 times in all, with eight victories coming in stakes.

Coinciding with his retirement, Shotgun Kowboy was scratched out of an allowance race Friday that would have marked his 2020 debut.

According to the Daily Racing Form, Shotgun Kowboy will retire to Trout's farm in Oklahoma, where time is expected to heal his injury.
