Hamp on the Scene Late in Henry Clark

Sagamore Farm’s Hamp rallied from the back of the pack to capture the $100,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes over the grass at Pimlico Race Course, the third of four stakes races this afternoon.

Javier Santiago was aboard the Ignacio Correas trainee, who reached in the final jumps to beat Roadhog, while Nutello finished a close-up third. The son of Sky Mesa covered the one mile distance in 1:39.66 and paid $18.80.

“We had a good race,” Santiago said. “The trainer told me to stay behind and wait for my time. I did not have any trouble but I did have to go a little wide because I saw the four (fourth place finisher Under Control) in front of me getting blocked on the inside. When I asked I got what I needed.”

The victory was the first stakes win for Hamp, a 4-year-old gelding, and upped his career earnings to $150,237.

“Javier worked the horse for me last week and got along very well,” Correas said. “The horse has been doing fantastic. I told him to make sure he was behind horses and keep him covered up as long as you can. When I saw that pace I got really excited. I knew he was going to be running at the end. He had to work real hard for the win today but that’s what you expect against a field of very good horses.”
