Hall of Famer Lukas in quarantine after positive COVID-19 test

Hall of Famer and horse racing icon D. Wayne Lukas tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in quarantine at his home in Louisville, Ky., according to a social media post by grandson Brady Wayne Lukas. 

Lukas, who turns 85 on Sept. 2, has been in the midst of a solid Ellis Park stand with a record of 30 5-3-2 and earnings of $131,333, which ranks fifth in the trainer standings. Brady Lukas said his grandfather had been away from the barn for several days and had subsequently become symptomatic. 

A follow-up tweet from Brady Lukas on Wednesday read, "Wayne is on the road to recovery and looks forward to getting back to the track."

Darrell Wayne Lukas, a former high school basketball coach, has been horse racing's most recognizable figure since bursting on the scene in the early 1980s following a successful career as a Quarter-Horse trainer. The achievements and accolades are numerous. 

Horses trained by Lukas have earned more than $284.5 million on the racetrack and tens of millions more in the breeding shed. He has won a record 20 Breeders' Cup races, four Kentucky Derbys, six Preakness Stakes and four Belmont Stakes. Lukas is a four-time Eclipse Award winner who was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1999.
