Hall of Famer Bill Mott's son, Riley, registers first win as a trainer
Riley Mott, son of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, collected his first career training victory when Unifying won Thursday’s sixth race at Churchill Downs.
Florent Geroux piloted the 1.45-1 favorite to the front-running win in the six-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies.
The victory came in just the third start for Mott, 30, who also has a third-place finish to his credit, according to Equibase records.
The younger Mott served as his father’s assistant trainer for eight years before taking out his trainer's license last year in Florida. He saddled his first horse under his name on Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs.
He was in Arkansas preparing for the Oaklawn Park meet that begins on Dec. 9 and watched Thursday’s race on his cell phone, Byron King of BloodHorse reported. Mott is preparing a string of 15 horses for that meet.
"Good day. Been looking forward to that my entire life, really," Mott told BloodHorse.
