Azeri, a multiple Grade-1 winner, including the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Distaff has been retired from her broodmare career in Japan according to a video posted by Northern Horse Park.
The 23-year-old is a four-time Eclipse Award winner, including the 2002 Horse of the Year award. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.
“She has just retired from racing this year and is now a lead horse,” narration on the video says, later going on to praise her skills at the new position. “... Azeri is strong and tough, teaching the weanlings social skills.”
Azeri, a daughter of Jade Hunter out of Zodiac Miss, by Ahonoora, trained by Laura de Seroux and eventually D. Wayne Lukas, began racing as a 3-year-old and quickly rose to prominence. She won her first three races and then earned her first stakes victory in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita.
The mare only finished out of the money twice in her career. She was retired in 2004 and was sold at the 2009 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $2.25 million to Katsumi Yoshida.
As a bloodmare she produced Wine Princess, who won the 2013 Falls City Handicap (G3) and more recently Leukerbad, a Japanese stakes winner.
