Peacock Racing Stables’ Gunnevera turned in his fourth consecutive bullet workout at Gulfstream Park West Saturday while breezing five furlongs in a sharp 58.80 seconds under Edgard Zayas.
Unraced since finishing fifth in the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico May 20, the Antonio Sano-trained 3-year-old colt was credited with the fastest of 12 workouts recorded at the five-furlong distance, more than two seconds quicker than the second fastest breeze.
“He went really good. He’s getting better and better with every work,” Zayas said. “He’s been training great. We wanted to give him a good work and he gave it to us and he galloped out really strong.”
Gunnevera, who captured the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream, is scheduled to make a start at Gulfstream in preparation for the Aug. 26 Travers Stakes (G1). The son of Dialed In ventured to Saratoga last year to win the Saratoga Special (G2) after breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park.
At Gulfstream Saturday morning, Curlin’s Approval returned to the worktab for the first time since capturing the Princess Rooney (G2) at Gulfstream July 1. The 4-year-old daughter of Curlin, who is owned by breeder Happy Alter and Bridlewood Farm, breezed a half-mile in 47.23 seconds, the sixth fastest move of 70 recorded at the distance.
