Peacock Racing Stables’ Gunnevera, a prominent contender for next Saturday’s 142nd Preakness Stakes (G1), arrived at Pimlico Race Course Saturday following a van ride from Kentucky.
The Kentucky Derby (G1) seventh-place finisher boarded a van at Churchill Downs at 5 a.m. and entered the Pimlico stable gate at 3:35 p.m.
“No problems. He loves to ship. You can see when you stop he’s taking everything in,” said Larry Kelly, a former trainer who drove the van and who has been serving as an advisor to trainer Antonio Sano, who is expected to arrive in Baltimore Monday.
Gunnevera, who settled into Stall 11 in the Preakness Stakes Barn, is scheduled to walk the shedrow Sunday morning.
Gunnevera, who was jammed at the start and raced wide in the Derby, is a three-time graded-stakes winner, capturing the Saratoga Special (G2) and the Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) last year and winning the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park this year. The son of Dialed In had prepped for the Kentucky Derby with a distant third-place finish in the Florida Derby (G1), won by Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.
Gunnevera joined Preakness candidates Always Dreaming and Royal Mo, who arrived from Churchill Downs Tuesday.
