We’re here to state the obvious: Recently minted champion Gun Runner, also a winner of the $16 million Pegasus World Cup in Saturday’s sendoff race, was voted HRN’s latest Horse of the Week.

The chestnut son of Candy Ride became the first two-time winner of the award that he also claimed following the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Off to Three Chimneys Farm to begin his stallion career, Gun Runner closed his racing days with five straight Grade 1s. In the Pegasus, he overcame an outside post position and short run up to the first turn — not to mention a salty field of competitors.

Gun Runner claimed 88 percent of the Horse of the Week vote. Jordan’s Henny, who struck at 59-1 in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie on the Pegasus undercard, finished second with 5 percent of the ballot. Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper winner Tommy Macho was third with 2 percent.

Vote for the Horse of the Week each Monday through Wednesday morning on the HorseRacingNation.com home page.
