Gulfstream winner No Nay Mets sells for $1.02 million
No Nay Mets, who was bred in Ireland but began his career with a victory in the Royal Palm Juvenile at Gulfstream Park, sold to new owner Tuckernuck Stables on Monday at the Goffs London sale, three days before a planned start in the Group 2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot. He hammered for $1.02 million (£800,000), the second-highest price at the sale.
The 2-year-old son of No Nay Never, who won the 2013 Norfolk for Wesley Ward, was trained by George Weaver and owned by Bregman Family Racing for his debut on May 13. Dismissed by the public at 10-1, No Nay Mets broke well, led at every call and drove clear to win by 3 1/2 lengths over Mattingly. Mattingly has yet to run back, but he is entered in a maiden special weight Saturday at Gulfstream.
An ownership group led by Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, Bregman Family Racing purchased No Nay Mets for $184,682 at the Arqana Deauville August yearling sale in 2022. Though they put him through the ring at OBS April, he was a $335,000 RNA and made his debut in the Bregman Family Racing colors.
Among 33 horses still possible for the Norfolk, No Nay Mets was a joint fourth choice in European wagering at 10-1 best odds Monday afternoon. Elite Status, coming off a listed win at Sandown, led the market at 13-8 best odds. The final field for the Norfolk will be drawn Tuesday morning.
The top sale of the day was Givemethebeatboys, twice a winner in Ireland including last out in the Marble Hill (G3), who sold for $1.41 million (£1.1 million) on Monday. The 2-year-old son of Bungleinthejungle is entered in Tuesday's Coventry (G2) at Royal Ascot, a six-furlong turf sprint. With 4-1 best odds in Monday wagering, Givemethebeatboys is the third choice among 22 declared runners.
