Gulfstream Park's Rainbow 6 Pool Continues to Grow

There will be a carryover of $727,105.69 for the 20-cent Rainbow 6 for Thursday’s program at Gulfstream Park. The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for 20 consecutive programs since it was last hit for $76,799.38 on Jan. 13. The largest payout of the current Championship Meet was $262,634.84 on Jan. 7.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when a single unique ticket is sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

There were multiple tickets solved with all six winners on Wednesday, each worth $21,280.96.

Thursday’s Rainbow 6 will cover races 6-11. Post time for the first race is 12:35 p.m. Gulfstream is offering six racing days this week including a special Presidents Day holiday program on Monday, February 15.
Battery Powers to Victory in Gulfstream Feature
Harrell Venture LLC’s Battery ($3.00) continued his progression with a professional performance in today’s fourth race at Gulfstream Park, a nine-furlong allowance for 3-year-olds.

Heavily favored against four rivals, the Ontario-bred son of Bernardini settled into an easy rhythm in third under jockey Javier Castellano. Fashionable Freddy set even fractions of :48.13 and 1:12.72 while shadowed by Isofass, but the Triple Crown-nominated Battery swooped past them on the second turn to take the lead, and was never seriously threatened by the rallying All Up in Lights. He hit the wire two lengths clear and was timed in 1:49.69.

“That was perfect,” Castellano said. “It was a dream trip—I like to see two horses go to the lead and keep a target on those two horses. We taught him a little bit, that he doesn’t have to be on the lead. When I asked him he responded—you can really feel the acceleration. I think he’s the kind of horse that the more distance, the better.”

After finishing fourth in his career opener for trainer Todd Pletcher at Woodbine in October, Battery graduated by 3 1/4 lengths at Gulfstream Park West on November 21. He was favored next out in a January 9 allowance at Gulfstream, but had to settle for second behind runaway winner Cherry Wine, who is among the leading candidates for the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on February 27.

“He wasn’t on the lead last time, but he finished strong and was second-best that time,” Castellano added. “It was his first time going a mile and an eighth today and he proved that he’s a very competitive horse. He really did well.”
Produced by the Saint Ballado mare Flawless Diamond, Battery is a half-brother to the talented Canadian performer Blue Heart. He was purchased as a 2-year-old for $350,000 at the OBS June Sale.

Miami Shores Attracts 16 Nominations

Sunday’s featured race at Gulfstream Park will be the $65,000 Miami Shores Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong test for fillies and mares that attracted a total of 16 nominations. Leading the cast is Stoneway Farm’s Stonetastic, a graded stakes winner at three and most recently runner-up to Best Behavior in the $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park on December 26. Kelly Breen trains the 5-year-old daughter of Mizzen Mast. Miller Racing’s Best Behavior was also nominated to the Miami Shores, but is expected to run Saturday instead in the $200,000 Royal Delta Stakes (G2).

Mom’z Laugh, who posted a determined victory in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff on January 16 at Gulfstream, has also been made eligible to the Miami Shores. Owned by A. Bianco Holding, the 4-year-old daughter of Leroidesanimaux is trained by Marcus Vitali. Jacks or Better Farm’s Dogwood Trail, winner of the Azalea Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream last summer, is also among the nominees. Fourth in the Sunshine Millions Distaff, the 4-year-old Florida-bred filly most recently finished sixth behind Lady Shipman in the Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream on February 6.

The Miami Shores nominees are rounded out by Enchantress, Fond of Sarah, Hold Me Down, Ida Bambina, Legal Laura, Milam, Miss Melinda, More Than a Party, Norquay, Savingtime, Sky Gold and Tea Time.

WHO’S HOT: In addition to the aforementioned Battery, leading rider Javier Castellano also scored with Sanctifica ($4.00) in Wednesday’s first race. John Velazquez booted home two winners, Firsthand Report ($7.80) in the fifth race and Truly Together ($8.20) in the eighth race. Trainer Alfred McIntosh and jockey Edgard Zayas teamed up for a double on Wednesday with Very Very Stella ($52.00) in the third and Noble Prince ($8.00) in the finale. Trainer Todd Pletcher solidified his lead in the standings by saddling both Battery and Firsthand Report.
