Richard Guggenheim of New York, NY finished up the long holiday weekend a WINNER in DerbyWars' $10,000 SUNDAY Game!
Guggenheim, who is known as "guggie" in the game, bested 49 other contenders to take home the $5,000 first prize!
"My strategy is to handicap the contest races, pick the 'best value' from the contenders I prefer and watch selected videos to get a 'hands on feel' to help me finalize my selection," Guggenheim said.
That strategy helped him start out strong with the 7-1 Lady of Gold in the first contest race, a turf allowance for fillies and mares at Aqueduct. His next 2 picks at Gulfstream didn't score, but when the action returned to Aqueduct, his momentum picked up as well. He added with two second-place finishes, then hit a 6-1 winner at Gulfstream. His strength showed at Hollywood - $6.80 in race 3, $24.00 in race 4, $12.40 in race 5, and $10.00 in race 8.
His keen picks throughout the day put him in third place with $84.60 going into the final race behind "Panther1" (Denis McCormick)  at $87.30 and "JoeK" (Joe Koury) with $86.10.  The Grade 1 Matriarch at Hollywood Park went to the gate with the contest on the line.   Panther1 went with #8 Better Lucky (4-1) and JoeK went with #5 Tiz Flirtatious (9-5), while Guggie went with #2 Discreet Marq (8-1).  As it turned out, Better Lucky was only a half-length back in third and Tiz Flirtatious was a close fifth, but Discreet Marq poked her head in front in mid-stretch before losing a photo to the very game Egg Drop.  Discreet Marq paid $10.00 to place to allow Guggie to leapfrom from third to first with a final score of $94.60.

That pick was worth a difference of $3,750 to Guggenheim.
"Remember, it's an art, not a science, and have fun," he advises players new to the contest scene.
Denis McCormick, took home $2,000 for his solid effort and $87.30 final score, while Joe Koury finished 3rd for the $1,500 prize with a total score of $86.10.
