Guaranteed Pools Saturday at Gulfstream
Saturday’s 12-race card at Gulfstream will feature guaranteed jackpot pool carryovers in several of its popular exotic wagers, including the Rainbow Six, Pick Five, and Late Pick Four.
The Rainbow Six, which produced a $133,874.46 payoff Thursday when a single better cashed in on a winning ticket that cost just $4, will have a guaranteed pool of $50,000. A 20-cent base wager, the Rainbow Six has become known for its low-risk, high-reward payoffs, having produced a $6.6 million payday last May. Saturday’s Rainbow Six will be comprised of races seven through 12, including the $150,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3), featuring Sugar Swirl (G3) winner Merry Meadow, and the $60,000 Cooper City Stakes, the tenth and eleventh races on the card.
The Late Pick Four, consisting of the ninth through twelfth races, will have a guaranteed jackpot pool of $100,000, while the Pick Five (races eight through 12) will boast a $50,000 guaranteed pool. Both are 50-cent base wagers.
Gulfstream’s Saturday card features 12 races with 125 entries, an average of more than 10 starters per race.
Karibu Gardens Captures Friday Feature
Grade 2 winner Karibu Gardens came away with a victory in Friday’s eighth and featured race, a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance for older horses. The 5-year-old son of Flower Alley, who won the Sky Classic Stakes (G2) at Woodbine last August, earned his first victory since that race in his first start off a 2 ½-month layoff.
After breaking slowly, Karibu Gardens settled in mid-pack early, 7 ½ lengths off the pace, but in the stretch, the dark bay produced a strong rally under Javier Castellano, splitting horses to get up for a 1 ¼-length victory over Greengrassofyoming and Sinatra. Owned by Melnyk Racing Stables, Inc., he paid $6.20 to win. The final time for the race was 1:39.51.
Trainer Josie Carroll said Karibu Gardens, who gave Carroll her first win of the meet, relished the firmness of the Gulfstream Park turf course and attributed her trainee’s recent off-the-board finishes in the Tropical Park Turf Handicap (G3) and Northern Dancer Stakes (G1) to course conditions.
“He came into [the race] in good order,” Carroll said. “We were expecting a big race out of him. He happened to catch a soft turf in his last two starts, and he just didn’t care for that very much. We had a nice firm course today, and he was full of himself. He just got a great ride. He broke a little tardy, but I thought [Castellano] was very patient with him and got the job done.”
