Jimmy Jerkens has scheduled Grade 2 winner Green Light Go to stay around one turn in his 2020 debut.
The trainer said Friday, after the Hard Spun colt worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 at the Palm Meadows Training Center, that Green Light Go’s pointing to Gulfstream Park’s Grade 3, $150,000 Swale Stakes. That’s opposed to going later in that same card in the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull (G3), a Kentucky Derby prep that would have sent the Stronach Stables runner a route of ground. “I wanted him to have a race to build off of,” Jerkens said. “At least he does have a mile race under his belt as a 2-year old. He’s a talented horse, no question.”
Jerkens sent Green Light Go to the sidelines for time off in anticipation of his 3-year-old season. He now anticipates one more work before the Swale, a seven-furlong sprint.
Jockey Javier Castellano is scheduled to ride in place of Junior Alvarado, who guided Green Light Go in his three previous starts. “He went nice and was supposed to go not all out,” Jerkens said of Friday’s breeze. “It was a good work and he galloped out pretty strong. He’ll come back next week and I’ll probably give him his final stiff work. He’s been on a steady schedule and looks fit. He didn’t get heavy by any means during his time off.” Jerkens said Green Light Go will have time to acclimate to Gulfstream before the Swale. “We’ll ship him down there one day and school him in the paddock one of these days before the race,” he said. Green Light Go shows five published works at Palm Meadows, with Friday’s move his third in a row at 5/8 of a mile.
