A photo finish in the Grand National with Tiger Roll a winner

From a field of 39 horses tasked with two laps, four miles and 30 jumps at England's Aintree Racecourse, Saturday’s Grand National still came down to a photo finish.

Tiger Roll emerged as the leader over the final two fences but surrendered an open-lengths lead to late to Pleasant Company, the pace setter who came with a strong late run. Under jockey Davy Russell — the oldest rider in the field — Tiger Roll managed to hold on for a victory.

Bless The Wings ran third with Anibale Fly fourth.

“I’ve won this race a thousand times in my head," said Russell, 38. "I hope everyone who has supported me along the way can enjoy this”

Trainer Gordon Elliott added that Tiger Roll is "a stable favorite" -- and that's before he won one of the world's most-famous races.

Listed at 6-1 on the U.S. tote, Tiger Roll, an 8-year-old bred in Ireland, returned $15 in America.

Fourteen horses finished the race, which was led the first time across the wire by a loose horse. Pleasant Company led them most of the way until a mistake on the penultimate jump gave the lead to Tiger Roll for good.
