Grade 1 winner Fatale Bere to Japan after Keeneland January purchase
Grade 1 winner Fatale Bere, the last horse through the ring Monday at the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, was a highlight among the supplemented horses when selling for $700,000.
Consigned by ELiTE as Hip 397K, she went to Shadai Farm, whose Naohiro Hosoda signed the ticket and said Fatale Bere will head to Japan.
“We have many stallions, many Sunday Silences,” he said, “so maybe Deep Impact, Heart’s Cry. Many options.”
Fatale Bere was the third highest price during the first session, following Abel Tasman at $5 million and A Star is Born, in foal to War Front, at $750,000.
A 4-year-old French-bred daughter of Pedro the Great, Fatale Bere won two of three races in France before she was transferred to trainer Leonard Powell in Southern California. She was campaigned by the Benowitz Family Trust, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Mark Mathiesen and Mathilde Powell and won her U.S. debut in Santa Anita’s Surfer Girl Stakes at 2. She also finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar.
Fatale Bere opened up her 3-year-old season by winning the Providencia Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita and made her biggest performance that summer with a rallying neck victory in the Del Mar Oaks (G1).
She wrapped up her career with five wins from 11 starts and $427,964 in earnings.
“She’s definitely suitable for Japanese racing, so I thought I’d try,” Hosoda said. “I’m happy to get her.”
