Trainer Kellyn Gorder never has started a horse in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, but that figures to change in the next two weeks thanks to Bourbon Courage.
With owners Jamie Hill and Mike McMahon of Bourbon Lane Stable looking on Monday morning, Bourbon Courage worked five furlongs in :59.60, a move that was enough to plot a different course for the 5-year-old son of Lion Heart.
“I thought the work was pretty good,” said Gorder, who initially was looking at the Cigar Mile (G1) at Aqueduct on Nov. 29 for Bourbon Courage.
After the work, Bourbon Courage was pre-entered in the $1.5 million Xpressbet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) to be run Nov. 1 and the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) to be run Oct. 31 at Santa Anita with the first preference being the Sprint.
“I have never raced at Santa Anita,” Gorder said. “I have watched races there and saddled one at Hollywood Park, but have never started one there.”
Ricardo Santana Jr., who guided Bourbon Courage for the first time in a 3¼-length allowance win here Oct. 3, will retain the mount for the Breeders’ Cup, according to Gorder.
