Golden Gate joins economy in the tank

The national economy may be recovering, but horse racing in general and Golden Gate Fields in particular remain in recession.

Betting handle is down 10.2 percent nationally so far this year after dipping 7.0 percent in 2008, and the number of new foals is down 8.2 percent nationally and 15.8 percent in California.
