Golden Gate Fields is raising the guarantee on the Late Pick 4 to $100,000 for the remaining two weekends of the Turf Festival. The announcement comes on the heels of a stellar opening weekend for the three week event.
The track initially guaranteed the pool would reach $75,000, but the handle easily exceeded that mark this past Saturday and Sunday, with pools of $105,012 and $147,511 respectively.
“We are thrilled with how enthusiastically bettors responded to our racing product,” said Joe Morris, Senior Vice President of West Coast Operations for The Stronach Group. “Thanks to strong support from horsemen, we were able to present competitive and challenging races. As a result, we have confidently increased the Late Pick 4 guarantee to $100,000 for the two remaining weekends of the Turf Festival.”
Handle on the Golden Pick 6 also has been strong with $131,744 in new money wagered on Saturday and $171,410 bet on Sunday. The Golden Pick 6 is a jackpot-style wager that pays out the entire pool only when there is a unique ticket with all six winners. The jackpot will begin at $331,365.33 on Thursday.
Golden Gate Fields is the only track in California currently offering turf racing through May 1. During the three week Turf Festival, purses for all allowance and maiden special weight races on the turf have been raised $4,000. All other turf races (maiden claiming, claiming, and starter allowance) have had their purses hiked $3,000.
Free shipping from Santa Anita to Golden Gate Fields is being provided during the Turf Festival. Bob Hubbard Horse Transportation, Inc. has two vans going north and two vans going south every week during the event which is adding to the very competitive fields and increased handle.
The Golden Gate Turf Festival will continue for the next two weeks. Three stakes will be offered during the final weekend as Golden Gate Fields will present the Grade 3, $100,000 San Francisco Mile on Saturday, April 30 and the $100,000 Silky Sullivan and $100,000 Campanile on Sunday, May 1.
The Winter/Spring Meet concludes June 12.
