Representing Godolphin at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, bloodstock agent Anthony Stroud said Monday that “the boss is just looking for attractive horses that will make good athletes — good racehorses.”

The guy in charge — Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum — approved a second major purchase of the afternoon when Stroud signed the ticket for Hip 138, a $2.15 million Medaglia d’Oro colt who’s the first foal out of Tara’s Tango.

“You’ve got a value as a possible stallion,” Stroud said. “He represents what the market dictates.”

Earlier in the day, Godolphin paid a sales-topping $2.5 million for Hip 75, a Tapit colt who’s a half-brother of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist.

“It looks pretty solid, the market — doesn’t it?” Stroud said.

Those two purchases certainly helped.

As for Hip 138, connections were obvious with Darley, the Sheikh’s breeding operation, standing Medaglia d’Oro. Tara’s Tango meanwhile was a Grade 1 winner and participant in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint for for Stonestreet Stables and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

“You knew on 138, he was popular and had the right people, but you never let your expectations get that high, “ said Denali Stud’s Conrad Bandoroff, who consigned the Stonestreet homebred colt. “He was an incredible physical, and Stonestreet raises as good of a horse as anybody in the business.”

This was also only the latest success story for Denali, which consigned a pair of $800,000 purchases earlier Monday. Hip 68, a son of Curlin out of Scarlet Tango, went to agent Mike Ryan, and Hip 76, another son of Curlin by Serena’s Harmony, went to Shadwell.
