Get Stormy Blows Out for Shadwell Turf Mile
Sullimar Stables’ Get Stormy, winner of the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile here this spring, tuned up for a run in Saturday’s Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) by working three furlongs on firm turf around the “dogs” in :35.40 under exercise rider Javier Cabrera on Thursday morning.
“It was perhaps a shade strong, but it was fine,” trainer Tom Bush said of the work that included galloping out a half-mile in :47.80. “I wanted to work him before we left New York, but they had so much rain up there, I couldn’t do it. He hasn’t done anything in 12 days and he takes a lot of training, so that’s why he had the blowout this morning.”
Get Stormy will break from post position eight under new rider Garrett Gomez in the Shadwell Turf Mile as he attempts to become the first horse complete a Maker’s Mark Mile-Shadwell Turf Mile double in the same year.
Get Stormy has won two of three starts at Keeneland, having taken the Bryan Station (G3) in 2009 and run fourth behind Gio Ponti in last year’s Shadwell Turf Mile.
“He’s been a very consistent horse and is even more mature this year and carrying a little more weight,” Bush said of the 5-year-old, who followed his Maker’s Mark Mile victory with a triumph in the Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Get Stormy could earn another trip to Churchill Downs in the Shadwell Turf Mile, which is a “Win and You’re In” race for the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) to be run November 5.
“He would have to run extremely well to go to the Breeders’ Cup,” Bush said. “A lot depends on Saturday.”
Get Stormy finished 11th in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile behind Goldikova (IRE).
