General Quarters Edges Court Vision
General Quarters did not fire in his first start on the grass but found soft turf to his liking with a determined victory over Court Vision in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
One year earlier, General Quarters was the feel good story of the Kentucky Derby and finished 10th for his owner-trainer Tom McCarthy.
The four-year-old son of Sky Mesa settled for the place in his last four starts at Fair Grounds including two graded placings. Court Vision briefly appeared to be edging away but General Quarters fought back gamely under Rafael Bejarano.
Loup Breton was grinding away late but ran out of ground and settled for the show under Garrett Gomez.
The General completed his nine furlong journey in 1:53.42 and paid $19.60 to win.
