Anne Scott’s Galleon Mast came again in deep stretch to score by a head in Sunday’s $75,000 Eight Miles East Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, the ultra-game 4-year-old son of Mizzen Mast rallied from off the pace to take the lead in mid-stretch before being headed by My Point Exactly to his inside. Under a strong hand ride, the David Fawkes-trained gelding fought back to get to the wire first.
“He’s a fun horse,” Fawkes said. “He’s a neat horse. He likes to hang a little bit. He let that other horse come back to get a little competition.”
Fawkes said the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup next winter could well be in Galleon Mast’s future.
“I’ve been wanting to go, and he might be the kind of horse to go, but it’s a ways a way,” Fawkes said. “He’s a handy horse. He’s the kind of horse you could take over there. You’ve got to go the other way [around]. He adapts to everything.
Galleon Mast, who has finished in the money in 14 of 18 career starts, ran the mile on turf in 1:33.66 as the 7-5 favorite. My Point Exactly finished 1 ¾ lengths ahead of pacesetter Keepthedreamalive.
